Gary Gygax was a proponent of a more in-depth gaming system than Original D&Dprovided, and in 1977 TSR published this first of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons hardcovermanuals. Redesigned from the ground up, AD&D provided 'experienced' role playerswith complexity and detail (at the expense of individual creativity... AD&D encourageshand-holding). Proving to be the more enduring of the two game systems, AD&D is stillactively supported today, currently in its 4th Edition.

Thanks to Adrian Newman for the scan of the 3rd Print Beta / 4th print, and MichaelDeaton for the scan of the Sixth print.
In the below listings, I've removed the hyperlinks (all ofwhich were rather superfluous, internal links anyway), and added greenhighlighting to elements that changed from the previous print. This shouldhopefully make it easier to identify which print you have.

The first print was intended to be released in Sep 1977, but due todelays at the printer, was not released until after Christmas 1977 -- possibly even Jan1978
Gygax has stated that this first print numbered 50,000copies
About the publishing of this print (the first hardback RPG manual everprinted), again from Gygax: 'It was no problem finding a printer that could do astitched binding and school-book cover material, as I wanted the AD&D volumes to be asnearly indestructible as could be managed. Later on the Blumes changed that to save anickel or two on each copy printed... as if we weren't making enough as it was. (Acaeumnote: this occurred with the Fourth Beta print). Crown Books wanted me towrite a special introductory game book exclusively for them, but that was a no-go. Simon & Schuster contacted me about book trade distribution, but they were going totake a year to set it up, so I wasn't too thrilled. Then I got a phone call fromMildred Marmur, then the VP of Sub-Rights Licensing at Random House. They flew me outto NYC the next week and were ready to begin distribution in a month's time. As theremainder of the deal I negotiated assured TSR cash flow and other great benefits, I signedmy name up there in their offices on the second day of our meetings. Having Millie asan advocate was a lot of help in cutting a great deal for TSR. Both of her sons wereD&Ders!'

Now has printing numbers and dates on thecopyright page. We've done our best to keep these printing declarationsin-line with our own previous (Eighth print and earlier) print sequence, which has beendifficult!
Last page is blank, other than an Angled TSR logo
A printing has been found that states 'Thirteenth Print, Jul1990' inside. As this is impossible, I surmise that the typo is in the printingnumber rather than the date, and this is probably the Sixteenth or Seventeenth print. Thanks to Michael Deaton for this info.
An 'errata sheet' wasavailable for the First print; unknown where these sheets came from (since the books were notshrinkwrapped, it is highly unlikely they came with the book purchase). Most of the erratamentioned on the sheet were corrected with the Second print, so we surmise it was released sometimebetween Dec 1977 and May 1978. More info is needed. Thanks to Michael Deaton for thescan.
AuctionCommentary |
The Monster Manual, being the first AD&D hardcover, was probablyprinted in greater numbers than any other D&D book. As such, values are typically low for allbut the earliest prints. The early prints have the added benefit of rugged construction, whichhelps retain their condition.
Dnd 4e Monster Manual 3 Pdf
Description:
(That took way longer then I thought)
This mod changes Monster Manual’s mechanics completely, and adds a few familiars from Afterbirth and Afterbirth+ to its library..
– After a familliar has been spawned, it will not go away untill Isaac reuses MM or swaps active items
Unlike before, you won’t have more then 1 familiar spawned by Monster Manual at any given time
Added familiars:
Incubus, Fate’s Reward, Sworn Protector, Friend Zone, Lost Fly, Lil’ Gurdy, Seraphim, GB Bug, Spider Mod, Farting Baby, Succubus, Lil’ Loki, Obsessed Fan, Papa Fly, MultiDimensional Baby, Big Chubby, Shade, Hushy, Lil’ Monstro, King Baby, Bloodshot eye, Mom’s Razor, Angry Fly, Lil’ Harbringers, Lil’ Spewer
I tried to stay in the theme of ‘Monsters’ when adding familiars,
but I had a little bit of a personal preference as well
ADDED:
– Car battery synergy: Now spawns 2 familiars instead of 1 (wich you can both keep untill MM is reused)
– Void Synergy added
– Reworked the randomizing of familiars: worked with math.random before, but that gave the same result each time you used MM for the first time…Should be less predictable now
– Ball of bandages/Cube of meat will turn to the appropriate level instead of having a level 1 and level 2 cube of meat/ball of bandages (like how the original MM worked, will also spawn a level 2 cube of meat/ball of bandages if the player does not have either yet)
NEW (small) BUG:
– If you have a level 2 ball of bandages/cube of meat gotten from your own ball of bandages/cube of meat and one from MM, the familiar will do the ‘spawning’ effect each time you enter a new room. Only a visual bug, might fix this later
Fixed It
– No ‘giant book’ animation =c. Couldn’t find a way to play that animation…
RE-REWORKED THE MOD
You don’t need to worry about any of these
If you think I forgot a familiar, if I should remove a familiar or if there are any major bugs, leave a comment and I’ll look into it
Check out my MegaMod if you like changes like this!
Anyway…,
Change notes:
– Added Monster Manual to the Library pool
07/02/2018: Added Synergy with the Void and Used JSON to save familiars over gamestates
07/02/2018(again): Removed code that would spawn out item at beginning of run and print out a message in the console if it was activated
07/02/2018(again again): Fixed a bug where blue spiders and flies wouldn’t spawn with the mod on.
09/02/2018: Updated the itempools.xml file and fixed a small bug
20/02/2018: – Localized some variables
24/06/2018: – Reworked the mod completely. Adds a new item representing Monster Manual and replaces that with the original MM. I did it like this because I couldn’t stop the original MM from spawning undesired familiars.
TLDR; It works well, even though it’s a little hacky
27/06/2018: – Fixed that visual bug and some other ones too
01/07/2018: – Re-reworked the mod and added in compatibility with the True co-op mod, the external item desc mod fixed some bugs and added ‘Lil Spewer to the familiarpool
Required DLC:
These DLC should be installed in order to use this item.
